The rhetorical statement seems to be what most system integrators feel is true. After all, if they remain the only ones able to understand the system or use the code, then customers will always have to go back to them, right?

Data Science Automation understands we are not the only automation engineering company out there, or the only people trained in LabVIEW, so why do we insist on empowering our customers? First and foremost, it builds trust. It benefits customers to understand the product they have purchased. Not only is it ethically the right thing to do, it gives them a deeper appreciation for the value they receive and enables them to control their own destiny. Customer shouldn’t come back to you because you have them over a barrel, they should come back to you because they trust you and know the level of personal commitment you’ll take in ensuring their success beyond the sale.

Secondly, it truly is another way to demonstrate the knowledge, expertise, and skill set the customer receives from working with you. You can learn a technique, and you can implement a technique, but it takes extra effort and a deeper understanding to teach somebody else, and that becomes readily apparent when we empower our customers to be self-sufficient.

For me personally, I see following this approach a valuable way to self-improvement. Over the years that I have taught courses at DSAs certified training centers, I’ve learned that beginner users ask some of the most intriguing questions. And, I find a number of questions come out of the classic coding language debates. It forces me to re-examine how I would find the answers to the questions in the future. For instance, what does each language truly do better than others, and what benefits come out of using LabVIEW? Having worked through those questions has really helped me on sales qualification calls, where potential customers have not decided whether LabVIEW or National Instruments is the best solution for them.
